McKoon Funeral Home had its origins in the city of Luthersville, in Meriwether County, Georgia in the year 1907. Mr. J. U. McKoon was involved in a general merchandise business owned by his mother-in-law, Mamie Davis. From this business evolved the necessity for selling caskets to the public which were the typical "pine boxes" we have always heard about. After the Civil War, embalming had become an accepted practice, and families desired this service, as it allowed for time for travel for family members after a death occurred. In 1918 the business was moved to Newnan in a building on East Broad Street near Perry Street. The State of Georgia licensed Mr. McKoon in July 1920 to provide this service, and shortly thereafter, moved his business to a larger building on the south court square next to Reynolds Furniture Co. and in the space now occupied by Globe Communications. In 1937, the large Cuttino home on Jackson Street was offered to Mr. McKoon, and he moved his business there in a facility that would be more conducive to his serving the families of Newnan. While the building has undergone extensive renovations over the years, the stately dignity of the residence has been carefully preserved so that families being served by this firm may sense a strong sense of "home" during the time that they are here under our care. After Mr. J. U. McKoon's death, Mr. Robert McKoon and his family operated the funeral home and served the families of Newnan and Coweta County with great dignity and stalwart trust until the time of their retirement in 1986. The business was sold to Terry Daviston, and continues to this day to be operated as a family business built on the tradition of trust and propriety established by the McKoon Family.
