Carol Moody Burke

Carol Moody Burke, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026, at Wesley Woods in Newnan. She was 94. Born May 8, 1932, to Homer and Rose Locke Moody, Carol was smart, funny, fearless, and wonderfully quick-witted. She had a brilliant mind and a lively spirit, but her greatest interest and joy was her family, where she was deeply loved. Carol earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi and interned for Mississippi's Representative William Colmer in Washington, DC. She met her husband, Jim Burke, at Keesler Air Force Base in Gulfport, Mississippi, where Jim was stationed and where Carol served as assistant to the base psychiatrist. Jim, originally from upstate New York, met Carol and never looked back, becoming an adopted son of the South. Together, they made their home first in New Orleans, then Atlanta, and ultimately Newnan. While living in Atlanta, Carol worked in public relations and advertising. After moving to Newnan, she spent many years as an administrative assistant at First United Methodist Church. She treasured the wonderful members and friendships she made there, especially those in the Polly Crowley Sunday School Class. Carol loved children and spent many years as a Sunday school teacher and Girl Scout leader. She also cared deeply about her community. She was a charter member of the Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation, formerly Friends of the Carnegie, and was instrumental in its early formation, including the introduction of Southern LitFest. But perhaps Carol's favorite times were the simplest ones: relaxing with family and friends, sharing conversation and laughter, and enjoying a "finger or two" of a favorite wine in the late afternoon. She knew how to enjoy good company and good times, and her quick wit and sense of humor made being around her a pleasure.Carol will be remembered for the love she gave her family and friends and for the many lives she touched through her work, teaching, community service, and friendship. She is survived by her daughters, Lauren Jones, Roslyn Dowis (Bill), and Kay Burke (Wayne); grandsons, Burke Dowis (Eveie), Stanford Jones, and Jake Bowen; granddaughter, Ashley Bowen; and great-granddaughter, Mara Rose Dowis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Burke, and son-in-law, Bill Jones. A private graveside service will be held.
