Obituary for Charles Alford Barrett, Sr. Mr. Charles A. Barrett, Sr., age 80, of Newnan, died September 24, 2007 at Piedmont Newnan Hospital as a result of complications from a heart attack. A native of Fulton County, Georgia, he was born January 31, 1927 the son of the late Paul S. and Stell Hendrick Barrett. In 1943, he graduated from Campbell High School in Fairburn. Charles graduated from The University of Georgia in 1949. He was associated with Kappa Alpha Order and served as vice-president of that organization. Additionally, he served on the Interfraternity Council. A true patriot, Charles was a veteran of The United States Army and the U.S. Maritime Service. His love for his country and dedication to its principles extended throughout his life. Charles was employed by The Bonnell Company for 24 years and maintained his ties with his fellow employees through the Bonnell retirement club. Other interests included Newnan High School Booster Club, University of Georgia Bulldog Club, The American Legion, VFW, Sons of Legions and Union City Elks Club. He had been a member of the Elks organization for 46 years. The center of Charles’ spiritual life was at Macedonia Baptist Church. For 7 years, he was the travel planner for the church’s Young at Heart group which met twice monthly. In appreciation of his mother who graduated from Newnan High School in 1914, Charles contributed 140 books to the school’s library. Surviving Charles is his wife, Jane Copeland Barrett and his son, Charles A. (Chuck) Barrett and his wife Jill. Also surviving are an aunt, Mrs. Howell Barrett; cousins, Dr. Judy Barrett and Howell Barrett, Jr. Funeral arrangements are by McKoon Funeral Home at 38 Jackson Street in Newnan where the family will receive friends on Tuesday evening between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. The funeral service will be on Wednesday morning September 26, 2007 at 11:00 AM in the McKoon Funeral Home chapel with Reverend John Riley and Reverend Searcy Jackson officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Bill Warren, Jr., Mike Warren, Steve Warren, Scott Warren, Frank Farmer and Cris Hammond. Honorary pallbearers will be Harold Hammond, Max Bass, James Ferrell, Dillard Henderson, Jimmy Camp, Rabon McClain, Jim Watkins, Bill Warren, Sr., Chuck Novak, Larry Nations, Curtis Grice, Dr. James Bryant, Glen Bexley, Fred Morgan, William Hayes, Larry Allen, Bill Hammond, John Knight, Brooks Robinson and Winston Skinner. It is requested that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions be made in Charles’ memory to Macedonia Baptist Church Building Fund 1504 Macedonia Road Newnan, GA 30263.
