Clyda Vassey Nixon

Clyda Mullins Nixon, 92, of Moreland, Georgia, went to meet her Lord on Wednesday, July 21, 2010. Clyda was born to a family of eight children in Gaffney, South Carolina, on June 16, 1918. She married William “Bill” Nixon, the love of her life, on August 16, 1937. They lived in Atlanta until 1969. In what she called the best sales job of his life, Bill convinced Clyda to move to Moreland, where they became beloved members of their community. They attended First Baptist Church of Moreland where Bill served as deacon and Clyda continued to teach Sunday School in a career that spanned sixty years. Affectionately known as “Mimi” to family and friends, Clyda was always busy as she loved reading, sewing, cooking, playing bridge and making ceramics. When age and illness slowed her down, she still enjoyed talking with friends, watching her hummingbirds and cheering on the Braves. A true steel magnolia, she faced many tragedies with strength and grace. Clyda leaves behind a large and loving family. Her son and daughter-in-love, Joe and Dee Nixon; son-in-law Ben Thebaut; grandchildren Teresa and Scott Bonder, Bill and Rendy Nixon, April and Jim Kendra, and Lorie Thebaut; great-grandchildren Ben and Tricia Thebaut, Joshua and Caleb Nixon, Sam and Ella Bonder; her sister, Aurelia Hall; sister-in-law, Mary Nixon. Also surviving are her nephews David Nixon, George Sanders, Lawrence Childs, and Gregory Mullins; nieces Terri Allen, Barbara Mock, Janice Ryals, and Cecelia Barfield, Ginnie Knight and Louise Broach; great-nephews and great-nieces Joe and Wendy Nixon, Taylor Windham, and Lane and Joe Vehlen. Friends and family are invited to a time of visitation at McKoon Funeral Home between 6:00 PM -8 :00 PM on Friday, July 23. The funeral service will be at First Baptist Church of Moreland at 1:00 PM on Saturday, July 24. Please feel free to wear bright colors in celebration of a woman who always said she was too young to wear black. The interment service will be later Saturday at 3:30 at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta.
