Clyde Edward Barnett

On Sunday, October 13, 2019, Clyde Edward Barnett, age 80, passed away at Wesley Woods Retirement Home surrounded by family, following a valiant struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Ed was born on March 5, 1939 to the late Clyde Hoyt Barnett and Grace Jones Barnett in Birmingham, Alabama. He graduated from Ensley High School in 1957 and attended Georgia Institute of Technology, where he earned undergraduate and master’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Upon graduation, he served four years in the United States Air Force, taking part in aircraft and systems test programs at Edwards Air Force Base, California. On April 8, 1961, he married Sibyl Clark of Lineville, Alabama. After his service in the Air Force, they settled in Huntsville, Alabama, where they raised two sons, Mark and Lee. In 2006, Ed and Sibyl moved to Newnan, Georgia to be close to family. Ed’s life was shaped by his faith and his fondness of choral music. Throughout his life, he found great enjoyment from his participation in church choirs and in sacred harp singing. He grew up at Central Park Baptist Church, Birmingham, Alabama, and served as a Deacon at University Baptist Church and Weatherly Heights Baptist Church in Huntsville, Alabama. When he and Sibyl moved to Newnan, they found a spiritual home at First Baptist Church. Ed was an engineer’s engineer. He was a quiet man with a dry sense of humor who was well known for leading by example. After his service in the Air Force, he was employed by IBM to work on space exploration projects, including the Saturn V Moon Rocket and Skylab. Ed also worked for the Georgia Institute of Technology, Nichols Research Corporation, and Computer Sciences Corporation in Huntsville, Alabama, where he managed projects and mentored upcoming engineers. Of all of his work and experiences, he was most proud of his service as a Lay Leader, Board Member and Deacon with the congregation at Weatherly Heights Baptist Church. Ed is survived by his wife, Sibyl Clark Barnett; his sons, Mark and his wife Elizabeth Colvin, and Lee and his wife Beth; grandchildren, Clark and Jack Barnett; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Frances Barnett, brother-in-law and his wife, Sonny and Janetta Clark; sister-in-law and her husband, Diane and Neal Lattimore; nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the staff of Wesley Woods Retirement Home for the close and exceptional care that Ed received there. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 15, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson Street, Newnan, Georgia, with Dr. Jimmy Patterson officiating.
