Elva Allen Whitlock

With profound sadness, the family of Elva Allen Whitlock announces her passing on September 11, 2026. She was born on January 12, 1930, to Sylvanus Gardner Allen, Jr. and Vanilu Copeland Allen. Growing up on her family's farm on Wagers Mill Road, she was a lifelong resident of Coweta County. Mrs. Whitlock attended Sargent Public Schools and graduated from Newnan High School. She and Wendell Whitlock married after his service in the US Navy during WWII. In 68 years of marriage, they raised a family of three and together made a significant impact on their community. Like her mother, Mrs. Whitlock was an accomplished seamstress, practicing her craft into her 90s. She created beautiful clothes for family and friends, including wedding dresses for her daughter and two granddaughters, and altered countless garments. A couple of straight pins adorned every blouse - just in case. She was also an excellent cook, known for her fried chicken, cornbread dressing, and amazing lunches on the opening day of dove season. Her beautiful zinnias brightened the summer landscape. Always valuing good posture and correct grammar, she worked crossword puzzles in ink and balanced her checkbook to the penny. Mrs. Whitlock kept her wonderful sense of humor until the end. She treasured her family and was lovingly known as Snooks, Mother, Mom, Munner, Grandma, Aunt Elva and Aunt Snooks. Enjoying strong friendships throughout her life, she and Mr. Whitlock could often be found sitting outside visiting with friends and the neighbors' pets. A woman of strong faith, Mrs. Whitlock was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Newnan and the Loyalty Sunday School Class. As a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Coweta County, she served as president of that organization and helped promote local art shows for Coweta's youth. In 2025, the Kiwanis Club renamed their annual art show in her honor. The last of her generation, she was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister Elizabeth Beers, brother Gardner Allen, and grandson Nicholas Whitlock She is survived by her adoring family: daughter Clara Hackney (Ed) and sons Jimmy Whitlock (Clare) and Eddie Whitlock (Ame); grandchildren Kathryn Duckworth (John), Sarah Schmohl (David), John Hackney (Welby), James Whitlock (Kelli), Allen Whitlock (Katie), Robert Whitlock, and Ragan Whitlock (Ellen); great-grandchildren Kaitlyn Whitlock, Ila Clare Whitlock, Wendell Whitlock, Shepherd Schmohl, Clara Schmohl, Annie Duckworth, Shealy Hackney, Elsie Hackney, Oliver Whitlock, Hunter Whitlock, Elliot Whitlock, Charlie Whitlock, and Ruby Whitlock; as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Her family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of The Plaza at Wesley Woods of Newnan who loved and cared for her the last four years and to Dr. Ryan Crisel and the excellent practitioners at Piedmont Heart of Newnan.
