H. Irene Chapman

Irene Moore Chapman, 93, passed away Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at Christian City. She was born December 31, 1923 in East Point, GA to the late Judson Lamar Moore & Ruby Mae Williams Moore. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years and the love of her life, William L. “Larry” Chapman and her sister, Virginia Godwin. Irene and her husband, Larry, had 54 wonderful years together. They were both employed by Rich’s Inc. in Atlanta for 20 years. Irene was in the Research Department and was instrumental in aiding in the establishment of Rich’s first branch of stores in Atlanta. She later became a buyer of women’s accessories on the main floor. She resigned when Larry took a job in New York City with J.C. Penney in their corporate office. She and her husband purchased a home in Chappaqua, NY and joined the Salem Golf Club in N. Salem, NY where Irene learned to play golf. After 10 years in New York, Larry took a job with Pickwick International in Minneapolis, Minnesota and they bought a home in Minnetonka and joined Wayata Country Club in Wayzata, Minnesota. After five winters in Minnesota, Irene decided it was time to come home to Georgia. Atlanta had changed so much in 15 years, it was difficult to choose where to live so finally in 1986 they settled in Newnan. They joined Peachtree City United Methodist Church which was a real blessing. They also joined Canongate Golf Club. Irene had become an avid golfer and also an artist. She joined the Newnan Coweta Art Association. Condolences can be expressed online at www.mckoon.com Irene is survived by sister, Betty Plant of Columbia, SC; a loving niece, Karen Torbush of Luthersville, GA and great-nephew, Fred Joseph Godwin III of Atlanta. Irene’s wishes were to have a simple graveside service at Monroe Hills Memorial Gardens, W. Main St, Forsyth, GA which will be held Monday, July 3, 2017 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Shannon Karafanda officiating. The visitation is Sunday evening between 6:00 to 8:00 at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson St, Newnan.
