Helen Patricia Watts

It was a rather warm day approaching the spring season on March 12, 1929 when Helen Patricia Watts was born in Troup County to the late Rawson Paul and Helen McCollough Shell. She was a younger sister to her late brother, Rawson Paul Shell, Jr. Known to all as Pat, she attended schools in the West Point area and later attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute, the small college that would forever be remembered as Auburn University. Her affection for Auburn came to be a serious family rivalry to the point that her Alabama loving neighbors had to endure her flaunting the Auburn flag, and at one point asking for their help in putting hers out! Pat’s life was one that revolved around her family and supporting her husband in his construction business. Her house came to be the unofficial gathering place for all of the neighborhood children. It was not unusual for the house to be full of kids who left their horses, ponies and an occasional donkey tied out front. It was during this time that she and her husband Buddy developed a great abiding interest in NASCAR. Pat’s life changed dramatically in 2008 when Buddy passed away. She found great comfort in her family and having a grandson living close by her home. She loved the many hours she spent in service to her beloved Macedonia Baptist Church. If there was something cooking in the kitchen, Pat was going to be close by helping out. In addition to her husband Henry A. Watts, Jr., she was predeceased by her daughter Terri Watts Blair. She is survived by her daughter Cindy Watts Vessell. She was grandmother to Renee Faulkner, Chris Harmon and his wife Jennifer, Michelle Klinger and her husband Oliver and Misty Wright. Her great grandchildren are Drew and Reece Phillips, Madison and Jacob Harmon, Haley and Kane Wright, Gabrielle and Garrett Klinger. Pat will be fondly remembered in a service on Monday, July 6, 2015 at 11:00 AM in the historic sanctuary of Macedonia Baptist Church with Dr. John Riley and Reverend Searcy Jackson officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Sunday evening at the funeral home between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM.
