James R. Bishop

James Richard Bishop, 82, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully at home on September 22, 2024. Jim was a wonderful person, always ready with a joke and a kind word. He was a rock for our family and helped many in the community as well. Jim became a deacon in 2002 in the Catholic Church and derived great joy from his duties, especially visiting the sick and bringing them communion and fellowship. He was active in many local clubs including the Knights of Columbus, the Elks, the Moose Lodge, and the American Legion. Jim was born on August 10, 1942 in Pitcairn, Pennsylvania to Alan and Mildred Bishop, the eldest of four children. He was very proud of his service in the Marine Corps as a Lance Corporal (1961-1965). His later career included jobs with Southern Bell, Eastern Airlines, Pinkerton, Gainey, and Coweta County. He loved working with people and he had "more stories than Mother Goose." Jim cheered for the Braves and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He officiated and coached baseball and football. He was scouted for professional baseball as a teenager, was a DJ in high school, performed in amateur plays, did beautiful counted cross stitch, and made amazing pina coladas. He loved big band music, old westerns, and Hallmark movies. He would always fall asleep at family gatherings, often with a sleeping baby on his lap. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Andrea; their children: Kevin, Karen (Harold), Brian (Tara), Stephen (Lisa), Rebecca, and Jimmy (Christi); the grandson they raised, Kane (Summer); their grandchildren: Caroline (Thomas), Kylie, Parker, Avery, Anna, and Victoria; their great-grandchildren: Lola, JJ, Lydia, and Maddie; and his siblings Gene (Pat) and Bunny. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bill, and his daughter-in-law, Renee. Deacon Jim's Requiem Mass will be at St. George Catholic Church at 771 Roscoe Road, Newnan, GA, 30263 on Thursday, October 17, 2024 at 10:30am. A Rosary will be said at 10:00am.
