Lavonia Smith

Lavonia Thompson Smith of Moreland gently left this life on February 16, 2009, at the age of 93 years. A native of Coweta County, she was born August 8, 1915 one of seven born of the marriage of Joseph Samuel and Hattie Eunah Evans Thompson. She was the last surviving child. She was preceded in death by her husband Harvey Levy Smith in 1993. Lavonia was a very progressive woman. Though born of humble, rural people, she embraced opportunities to improve her life and that of others for whom she felt responsible. Her life was dedicated to providing a stable and nourishing home life for her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Lavonia’s bountiful table was always a welcome delight for family and friends who were fortunate to be in her home at meal time. She was always actively involved, as long as her health permitted, in preparations for the annual barbecue on July 4th in Moreland. Her beautiful yard was a canvas on which she painted scenes using flowers and her natural gift for gardening. Always a person of great personal style, she managed the local Cato Apparel shop for 16 years. Her customers always benefited from her flair for fashion. As important to Lavonia as her family was, equally vital to her life was her involvement in her beloved First Baptist Church of Moreland. She was the matriarch of the church, having been a member for 77 years. During these years of selfless service, she taught Sunday school and Sunbeams for 26 years. Surviving Lavonia are her children, H. Richard Smith, Robert Larry Smith and his wife Phyllis, Gail Smith Carroll and her husband Leonard. Lavonia cherished her grandchildren Jeff Carroll and his wife Leslie, Kim Smith Pelletier and her husband Joe, Stacey Smith Henderson and her husband Kevin. Six great grandchildren made life even more special. They are Josh Pelletier, Daniel Pelletier, Camille Carroll, Andrew Carroll, Eric Henderson and Matthew Henderson. Frances Moore has been a dear friend to Lavonia and was as special as family to her. Funeral arrangements are by McKoon Funeral Home at 38 Jackson Street where visitation was on Tuesday evening. The funeral service is Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel. Officiating will be Reverend Jerry Eley, Reverend Ralph Wade and Reverend Searcy Jackson.
