Shirley Capes

September 30, 1933 - March 2, 2022

Mrs. Shirley M. Capes died of natural causes at an assisted living home in Largo, Florida, March 2, 2022 at the age of 88. Mrs. Capes was born in Norfolk, Virginia September 30, 1933. She was the daughter of Robert A. Melson and Mary C. Lewis (nee McGee), and was married to the late Tasker L. Capes, Jr. of Newnan, Georgia, for 71 years. She was pre-deceased by her husband, her sister Jeanne Collabella, and brother Bobby Melson. Shirley was a loved and respected wife, mother, and friend; a Christian who grew up in the depression, was devoted to family and had a strong work ethic. She was an avid reader and gardener, and an active leader in the church, most recently the East Newnan Baptist Church. In addition to being a homemaker and raising three loving sons, she had successful careers in fashion and banking in Atlanta, having worked for Brooks Brothers, Trust Company Bank, and SunTrust Bank before retiring to Newnan in 1998 with her husband. Shirley is survived by three sons and their spouses: Terry and Debbie Capes of Seminole, FL; David and Cathy Capes of Houston, TX; and Paul and Laurie Capes of San Antonio, TX. She had five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Condolences may be expressed online at www.mckoon.com The family will hold a graveside service celebrating Shirley's life Tuesday, March 8, 2022 at 4 o'clock at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Newnan.
