Anne Margaret MacDonald

Anne Margaret MacDonald, age 85, of Sharpsburg, GA, peacefully entered the presence of Jesus on July 3, 2026. Anne was born on August 17, 1940, in Glasgow, Scotland, to the late Norman Rutherford Stewart and Margaret Ellen Stewart (née Drummond). She spent her childhood and young adult years in the country she dearly loved before answering God's call alongside her husband, Alexander Hugh MacDonald, to leave Scotland and begin a new chapter of ministry in the United States. Throughout their years of ministry, Anne and Hugh made homes and lifelong friendships in Winter Park, FL, Palm Springs, FL, College Park, GA, and finally Sharpsburg, GA since 1999. Anne was a loving wife and mom, a loyal friend, and someone whose kindness made everyone feel welcome. Anne was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Norma; and her brother, Ronnie. She is survived by her husband, Alexander Hugh MacDonald; her son, Alan Roderick MacDonald (Sandy); her daughter, Elaine MacDonald Lawson (Jonathan); her treasured grandchildren Brandon Lawson, Abigail Vermilyea (Jim), and Alexandria Waters (Mason); and many extended family members and dear friends. As a young woman in Scotland, Anne danced ballet, played the cello in her high school orchestra, and developed a lifelong love of music. She especially loved to sing, and later in life, when finding words became increasingly difficult, she would often hum or sing familiar melodies in her sweet sing-song voice, bringing joy to everyone around her. Before Anne married Hugh, she was already involved in church and missions. In her late teens, she went on a mission trip to the Scottish Orkney Islands. With her church, she sang in the choir, sometimes joining her friends to sing and give testimonies to churches around Scotland. She taught Sunday School at her church, even teaching a young man, Donald, who later grew up to become a dear family friend and the family lawyer and estate executor. Once married, Anne joined Hugh in leading pilgrimages to Israel and Egypt, and several mission and evangelistic trips to Brazil, Colombia, and Canada. As their ministry progressed, Anne enjoyed working with children through nursery, VBS, AWANAs, and other programs. Her Christian faith was not merely something she simply professed - it was evident in the way she loved, served, and cared for others every day. Anne's professional roles included being an Executive Secretary for a marine security company and a carpet manufacturer in Scotland, and a Christian school Principal in the West Palm Beach, FL area. She served as a hospice volunteer, comforting patients during the last days of their lives and ministering to their families. She especially relished her employment as a Nanny, helping raise children alongside their parents and becoming a loved part of their families in the process. Anne's greatest joy was spending time with family and creating lasting memories with those she loved. She delighted in watching her children and grandchildren grow and treasured her time with them. Her favorite places were the beach and anywhere her grandchildren were. Anne was, above all else, a genuinely kind and compassionate person. She possessed the rare gift of making every person she met feel important. Whether standing in a grocery store checkout line, eating in a restaurant, or waiting in a doctor's office, she never met a stranger. What often began as a simple conversation with someone she had never met frequently grew into friendships that lasted for years. She had an extraordinary ability to listen with genuine interest, offer encouragement, and brighten the day of everyone around her. It is no exaggeration to say that she was loved by virtually everyone who knew her. Even in her later years as her health declined, Hugh described his wife as "bright, friendly, outgoing, and compassionate". Anne kept an optimistic and upbeat personality, always content, rarely complaining, and inquiring about the well-being of others. Anne leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured by years lived, but by lives touched. She demonstrated that true greatness is found not in seeking recognition, but in faithfully loving God and loving people. Her family finds great comfort in knowing that she has now heard the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant," (Matthew 25:23) and is reunited with loved ones in the presence of her Savior. She will be deeply missed, but her gentle spirit, joyful songs, loving smile, and unwavering example of Christian love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her. A memorial service celebrating Anne's life will be held on Monday, July 6, 2026 at 3:00 PM in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home & Crematory, 38 Jackson St., Newnan, GA 30263.
