Arthur Hugh Dye

Mr. Arthur Hugh “Buster” Dye, age 93, died peacefully in his sleep on November 11, 2015, at Southlands Assisted Living Home in Ridgeway, SC. As a World War II veteran and authentic representative of the greatest generation, many of those who knew Mr. Dye found it appropriate that Veteran’s Day was the day he left his earthly life to return home to his creator. Mr. Dye was born on November 29, 1921, in Helen, Georgia, to Arthur Lee Dye and Winnie Mitchell Dye. The Dyes moved to Helen from their native state of Virginia, when Arthur Lee Dye was transferred there by his employer, Morse Brother’s Lumber Company. As he pursued a career in the lumber industry, the elder Mr. Dye would move his family of eight children to Washington and Greensboro, Georgia, before settling in Newnan, Georgia, just as young Arthur was entering high school. Already working with his father in the lumber business from the early age of ten, the father and son would go on to form several successful lumber companies over the years. Since lumber was an essential commodity during WWII, Arthur received draft deferments in order to help supply much needed resources to the military. However, in January of 1943, he gave up his deferment and followed the military path of two of his brothers and enlisted in the Army. That began one of the greatest adventures of his lifetime, as the Army would take him to the island of Attu in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. Shortly after returning home in 1946, Arthur met Ann Hall, the love of his life. Arthur and Ann were married on June 27, 1948 and made their home in Newnan where they were members of Newnan First Baptist Church. Ann was an essential partner in all of the lumber companies Arthur formed over the years, but more importantly, she was his partner in life. The legacy that they were most proud of was that of their two children, Larry Hugh Dye and his wife Janis, and Angela Colleen Dye Friedell and her husband Ron, three grandsons, Arthur Hugh Dye, II and his wife Megan, Zachary Michael Friedell, and Michael Brian Dye, and four great-granddaughters, Ali, Lettie, Amelia and Cass Dye. In addition to his parents, Mr. Dye was preceded in death by Ann, his wife of 56 years, and his siblings, Garnett Dye, Dorothy Parsons, Kermit Dye, Iris Smith, Naydine Johnson, Jack Dye, and Geraldine Carlisle. He also leaves behind several much cherished nieces and nephews and their families. The graveside funeral service for Mr. Dye will be at 2:00PM on Sunday, November 15, 2015, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, with visitation prior from 12:00 – 1:45 at McKoon Funeral Home,38 Jackson St, Newnan.
