Brenda Strickland Covington

Brenda Strickland Covington, age 79, of Newnan, GA, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 17, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. She was under the compassionate care of hospice at Corinth Road Personal Care Home. Brenda was born on August 10, 1946, in Bulloch County, GA, to John Evers (J.E.) Strickland and Nell Hagan Strickland. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Gerald Strickland and Daniel Strickland, and her infant sister, Barbara. She is survived by her sister, Linda Strickland Tillinger; sisters-in-law, Edna Strickland and Myrna Strickland; her beloved husband of 56 years, James Thomas "Tom" Covington; their daughter, Ellie Love Covington of Savannah, GA; and their son, Russell Thomas Covington (Allison Handley) of Newnan, GA. She was a devoted and proud "Grammy" to Maelyn Love (9), James Evers (8), and Brenley Grace (4). Brenda grew up on a farm in Bulloch County, surrounded by a large and loving extended family. Raised in the Primitive Baptist Church, her life was shaped by the values of faith, hard work, and community. After graduating from Southeast Bulloch High School in 1964, she moved to Savannah and worked in various roles, including at Georgia Regional Hospital. In 1977, Brenda and Tom made Newnan their home, where Brenda embraced her greatest joy-being a full-time mom. The family joined White Oak Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, where she was an active and cherished member. Later, she returned to the workforce and eventually retired from Coweta County Public Buildings. Brenda loved cooking and feeding everyone who came through her door. She enjoyed square dancing, riding motorcycles, and sharing laughter with her many friends. She was the faithful heart of her family and circle of friends-a devoted wife, daughter, sister, aunt, mom, and loyal companion. She proudly held the title of Queen Mother Possum in a special group of lifelong friends, and her quick wit, sarcasm, bravery, and deep sensitivity were hallmarks of her vibrant personality. Her motto was: Never give up. In 2010, following the discovery and removal of a large brain tumor, Brenda faced an uphill health journey. Despite the challenges-including being wheelchair- and later bed-bound-she met each day with stubborn resilience, an unshakable will to live, and her unmistakable sense of humor. Her strength in the face of adversity was a testament to her spirit and faith. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 25 at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson Street, Newnan, GA. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM, followed by the service at 2:00 PM. Brenda wished to be cremated and in lieu of flowers donations to March of Dimes.
