Carole Ann Doherty

Carole Day Doherty of Newnan, Georgia, passed away unexpectedly yet peacefully on April 3, 2026. Born on May 5, 1939, in Atlanta, Georgia, Carole was the beloved daughter of the late Robert Talmadge Day and Mildred Otwell Day. She grew up with a vibrant spirit, serving as a high school cheerleader, and later married her high school sweetheart, William "Bill" Doherty, a star basketball player. Together, they shared more than 60 wonderful years of marriage, building a life rooted in love, family, and devotion. Carole and Bill began their family in Atlanta, later living for many years in Forest Park, and enjoying their retirement years in Fayetteville, Sharpsburg, and Newnan, Georgia. Carole was a lifelong learner who earned her bachelor's degree from North Georgia College, followed by a master's degree and an educational specialist degree at Georgia State University. She was a pioneer in her field, becoming one of the first school counselors in Clayton County, Georgia, where she made a lasting impact on countless students and families. From an early age, Carole had a deep love of reading, which blossomed into a passion for history-especially the British royal family. She delighted in researching and preserving her favorite moments of the past, creating handmade books filled with memories of "days gone by." She also loved to travel, with Ireland holding a special place in her heart among her many adventures. Carole had a joyful spirit and a love for music and dancing. After the passing of her beloved husband Bill in 2023, she continued to embrace life-she could often be found on the dance floor enjoying her favorite tunes or working on puzzles at Monarch House Assisted Living, where she resided in her final years. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Janice and John Dumas, and her sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth "Ginger" Doherty Stover. She is lovingly remembered by her sons, Robert Doherty and Mark (Kristi) Doherty of Newnan, Georgia; her step-grandchildren, John (Laura) Teague of Decatur, Georgia, James (Ana) Teague of Marietta, Georgia, and Tori (Soichiro) Oyama of Newnan, Georgia; her brother, Stanley (Carolyn) Day of Virginia Beach, Virginia; her brother and sister-in-law Pete and Kathleen Doherty of Isle of Palms, SC; sister-in-law Cathi Doherty of Athens, Georgia; her first great-grandchild, Audrey Teague, who is expected to arrive any day; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. We will all miss her dearly. A visitation for family and friends will be held on April 18, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a celebration of life service at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan, Georgia. Carole will be remembered for her warmth, intelligence, creativity, and the enduring love she shared with her family and friends.
