Darrell James Jackson

Mr. Darrell James Jackson, age 66, of Newnan, Georgia, died at Piedmont Newnan Hospital on April 17, 2011. He was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on November 9, 1944, to the late J. C. Jackson and Iona McDonald Jackson. Darrell Jackson moved to Coweta County with his family before he was a year old and became a life-long resident of the Dresden Community. He graduated from Western High School in 1963 and went to work for Coweta-Fayette EMC, where he worked for 28 years as a line foreman. Mr. Jackson was a cornerstone figure of St. George Catholic Church, attending mass every week and taking much strength in his faith. Darrell will always be remembered as a colorful figure in his community, where he spent much of his time on his farm. He loved for friends, relatives and neighbors to visit, talk and benefit from his unique sense of humor and his vast skills as a repairman of all things mechanical. Former Atlanta Constitution columnist, Bob Harrell, once called Darrell, “the patron saint of all ignorant people in the community.” He dearly loved his family, his farm and his longhorn cattle. He will be remembered as a gracious, polite man who always rose from his chair and removed his hat when a lady entered the room. He loved to draw pictures, collect humorous writings, and write poetry in which he captured special moments in the lives of family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Martha Smith Guiler. Surviving are his wife, Nelda Smith Jackson of Newnan; children Shannon and Tim Zerangue, Jennifer and Tim Masdon, Madonna and Kenneth Overton, all of Newnan, and Jason and Charlotte Jackson of Tucson, Arizona. His grandchildren are Philip Barnette; Joshua, Hillary, and Walker Masdon; and Jackson, Sydney and Hope Overton. He is also survived by his brother Bruce Jackson and his wife Terri and nephew and niece Brent and Leigh Jackson; sister-in-law Cynthia and Andy Denny and niece Jessica and Eric Majka, and nephews Larry and Mark Railey, and niece Patricia and Dan Edmondson. Funeral arrangements are by McKoon Funeral Home at 38 Jackson Street in Newnan where the family will receive friends on Tuesday evening between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. The funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Austin Fogarty at St. George Catholic Church on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
