Irene Strickland

Mrs. Irene Smith Strickland, 86, died Sunday, April 4, 2010, at her home in the Stricklandtown community near Luthersville. Mrs. Strickland was born Sept. 12, 1923 in Malone, Ala., daughter of the late William Riley Smith and the late Bertha C. Richardson Smith. She was educated in Randolph County, Ala. and in Meriwether County. She worked in the textile industry for several years, was a cottage parent at the Georgia Baptist Children's Home in Palmetto and was a homemaker. For several years, she enjoyed keeping children in her home, and later she sat with older people in their homes. Mrs. Strickland was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church near Alvaton. She was preceded in death by her brothers Leonard, Reed, James, Calvin and Denny Smith; her son Dwight Strickland; and her granddaughter Dianne Davis. The family will receive friends at McKoon Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 6, from 6-8 p.m. The funeral service will be Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church in the Rocky Mount community near Luthersville with Rev. Winston Skinner officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons Ronald Veal, Michael Strickland, Dale Strickland, Ben Strickland; and great-grandsons, Brian Veal and Zachary Couch. Honorary pallbearers will be grandson David Cunning; great-grandsons, Alexander Walters, Theodore Walters, William Strickland, Jonathan Phillips, Kristian Strickland, Jordan Phillips, Tyler Carden; and great-great-grandsons, Ryan Veal, Nathan Veal, Caiden Veal.
