James Harold Barron

James Harold Barron, 89 passed away on June 2, 2010. Born to the late Thomas Kellam Barron and Othera Spraggins Barron, he graduated from Newnan High School and attended the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia. Harold was married for 62 years to his childhood sweetheart, Mary Catherine Sanders, who preceded him in death. They were married on Christmas Day in 1941, shortly before he reported for duty in the United States Army Air Force. He was a business leader in Newnan, serving on various committees and boards, including his service on the board of directors of The Citizens and Southern Bank, a board member of Newnan Utilities, president of the Newnan –Coweta Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Downtown Merchants’ Association, City of Newnan Alderman, and committee co-chair for the City of Newnan 150th Anniversary Celebration. He was a member of the Newnan Kiwanis Club and Golden K Kiwanis Club. Harold was awarded the Newnan-Coweta Citizen of the Year Award in 2003. One of his projects in which he invested countless hours and for which he proved to be one of the guiding forces, was the creation of the Veterans’ Memorial Park on Jackson Street. Central Baptist Church was the center of his spiritual life, as his grandmother was one of the founding members and his parents were active members their entire lives. He was a Sunday School teacher and superintendent, a deacon, chaired countless committees and sang in the chancel choir for over 70 years. He was a charter member of the Newnan High School Booster club and loved sports, especially University of Georgia football. He served as president of the Newnan Country Club, and with his lifelong friend Bill “Whooper” Lee, he founded the Flash-Whoop Golf Tournament – Harold being the holder of the moniker “Flash”. He also served on the Coweta County Sports Hall of Fame Committee. Harold is survived by three daughters; Sandra Glover and her husband John of Atlanta, Jane Barron of Decatur, Katie Brady and her husband Keith of Newnan. Also surviving are his grandchildren Merrilee and John Glover, Jr. of Bozeman, MT, Carrie and Jeffrey Glover of Atlanta, Mattie and Jason Brady of Newnan, Laura and Brian Smith of Newnan. There are three great grandchildren; Amelia Glover, Alec Glover and Grier Brady. His surviving brother is Dr. C. M. Barron of Newnan. Harold’s father was one of 12 children, so there are countless cousins in the Barron family. More important to Harold than all of his accolades was his desire to be remembered as a loving family member and a loyal and faithful friend to all. His life of dedicated service was driven by his desire to simply leave the world a better place – to be a part of the solution and never part of the problem. None could argue that he accomplished that mission. Funeral services are by McKoon Funeral Home at 38 Jackson Street in Newnan. Visitation with the family will be held on Friday, June 4, 2010 between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM at Central Baptist Church in Newnan on West Broad Street. The funeral service will be on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Central Baptist Church with Dr. Joel E. Richardson and Dr. Harry Barrow officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
