John Clinton Dunn

Mr. John Clinton Dunn, 90, of Newnan, formerly of Thomaston, GA, passed away peacefully on December 4th, with dignity and grace at home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in Molena, GA, on October 26, 1933, and was the only child of Charles Clinton Dunn and Hazel Brown Dunn. John moved to Thomaston at a young age, where his father owned and operated a jewelry store. He began school at the age of 5 years old and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School at the age of 16. John was a member of the ROTC. He then enrolled as the youngest student at Mercer University at the same age of 16, where he would eventually graduate. John enlisted in the Army, quickly becoming a captain and serving our country until he was honorably discharged. Afterward, he became the youngest person to open a Lincoln Mercury dealership located in Newnan, at the age of 27. After selling his dealership, he accepted a sales position from Mr. William Bonnell at his aluminum extrusion manufacturing plant. In his 31 years at the helm, "The William L. Bonnell Company", became the world's largest independent extrusion company. He regularly entertained clients and friends at his lakeside cabin. During that tenure, he also formed Dunn Sales and Trading Company and Comfort View Window Company to add to his professional repertoire. His ability to successfully manage and expand businesses was second to none. He was a member of several civic organizations as well. John was an avid hunter and sportsman. He hunted everything from big game to a variety of fowl on two continents and both hemispheres. He was an excellent marksman. After his retirement, he enjoyed fine dining, international travel with his wife, Brenda, and time spent with his prized companion, Pete, his beloved black lab. He also enjoyed spending time at his home on South Padre Island, TX. One of his favorite pastimes was fishing at Shellmans Bluff with his devoted friends on the Georgia Coast. John was a member of Central Baptist Church in Newnan. In the infamous words of "Papa" John Dunn "What a fine boy!". John is survived by his wife, Brenda Shelton Dunn, 3 daughters, Lisa Elrod Campbell (Scott) of Central, SC; Kim Elrod, of Newnan, GA and Tina Elrod Payton (Bubba) of Hogansville, GA, 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. The family extends their love and appreciation to his wonderful caregivers, Rosalyn, Velma, Gloria and Lawanda. The funeral is on Friday, December 8, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Central Baptist Church, in Newnan, with Dr. Joel Richardson officiating. The burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan.
