Lynne D. Maddux

Mrs. Lynne Dudley Maddux (73) of Newnan, Georgia passed away peacefully on Friday, October 11, 2024, at Piedmont Newnan Hospital. She was born on April 17, 1951, in Sanford, North Carolina to the late John Gordon Dudley, III and Anne Jewell Dudley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Sallie Dudley Darnell. Lynne spent her early childhood years in Shelby, North Carolina, followed by a move to Cedartown, Georgia her freshman year of high school. At Cedartown High School, she made lifelong friends and excelled in school, where she was Homecoming queen and class valedictorian. Upon graduation, she attended North Georgia College her freshman year and transferred to the University of Georgia, where she earned her degree in education. Lynne loved her years in Athens, enjoying school and making great friends who shared a love of the Georgia Bulldogs. She attended a surprise birthday party of a fraternity member on February 5, 1971. Little did she know at that time that this young man would be the one she would marry. After much pursuit by this gentleman, she finally agreed to go out on a date with him, and they were together from that moment forward. They were engaged in September 1972 and married on June 9, 1973. After college graduation, Lynne and Hugh moved to Atlanta while Hugh attended Emory University Dental School. Lynne began her teaching career at Stone Mountain Elementary School, and upon Hugh's graduation from dental school, the young couple moved to Newnan, Georgia, where Hugh established his dental practice. Lynne taught at O.P. Evans Junior High School until she gave birth to their one and only child, Kelly. Several years later, she returned to teaching at Newnan First United Methodist Church Preschool, where she taught for the next fourteen years. One of her greatest joys was teaching her precious students and hearing stories from former students about how much they loved "Miss" Lynne. Upon her retirement from teaching, she went to work in Hugh's office as a dental and office assistant, where she thoroughly enjoyed working in a clinical setting and helping her husband take excellent care of his patients. While she loved teaching and working in Hugh's office, being a wife and mother (and later, a grandmother) was Lynne's greatest joy. She lovingly and selflessly cared for house and home, cooking delicious meals every day for her family, supporting her husband in his career, and helping her daughter grow and feel loved beyond measure throughout her childhood and beyond. She had an especially soft spot in her heart for animals, and in addition to loving on her family, she rescued and provided a safe home for a number of beloved Cocker Spaniels, cats, and even the occasional wildlife rescue, like the baby squirrel she named "Rocky", that would find their way to Lynne's home. She loved decorating her home, often frequenting antique stores where she would be thrilled to find another piece of furniture or decorative item to add to her collection. She also had a love for clothes, and she was known to keep an item of clothing for many years, wear it, and be able to say she purchased it 20 years ago at Talbots (most likely on sale, as she loved a good bargain!). And for anyone who knew Lynne well, they were familiar with her hilariously ironic nickname of "Skinny" which was given to her by her father and remained with her for the rest of her life. Hugh hardly ever called her "Lynne", as "Skinny" was a nickname of endearment that close family and friends used as if it were her given name. Lynne was blessed with a wonderful life filled with family, friends, and community. She was kind and gentle, had a heart of gold, and was selfless, giving, and so incredibly loving. She will be missed, but her legacy will live on through her family, friends, and all of her students and their families whose lives she touched. The family wishes to thank everyone who lovingly cared for Lynne the last several years, including Piedmont Newnan Hospital, City of Hope, Blueprint Psychiatry, and Brightmoor Hospice. The visitation will be Tuesday, October 15 between 5 and 7 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson Street, Newnan, and the funeral will be Wednesday, October 16 at 2 p.m. at Newnan First United Methodist Church, 33 Greenville Street, Newnan, with the Reverends Andrew Chappell and Connor Bell officiating. Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Hugh Nelson Maddux; her daughter, Kelly (Hap) Hines of Newnan; grandchildren Edie and Harris Hines; sister Laurie (Kemp) Jones of Athens; brother Bill (Debbie) Dudley of Cedartown; and a host of treasured family and friends.
