Ronald Herman Helms

Cap. (Ret). Ronald Herman Helms, known by friends and family as "Ronnie or Ron", age 68, of Newnan, passed away Friday, January 5, 2024, at Sacred Journey Hospice after a very difficult six-month fight with cancer. He was born July 15, 1955, in Thomaston, GA to the late Herman Basil Helms Jr and Betty Laura Waldrop Hobbs. Ron grew up in Newnan, GA and was a 1973 graduate of Newnan High School. He was a proud graduate of The University of West Georgia with a nursing degree. He joined the United States Air Force in August 1979, where he served his country for 33 years. In the Fall of 1993, he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgins Lymphona. He fought a valiant fight with cancer that covered several years with the support of the Newnan community with him being treated at the Dana Farber Clinic in Boston which resulted in its remission. While in the service he was part of the Office of Special Investigations and was a part of the Vice President security detail as a well as a loadmaster. Being loadmaster was his favorite job in the Air Force. He served in Desert storm as well as the Iraqi Freedom war. He retired in 2012. When he retired, he was in charge of the Yellow Ribbon Program for the Southeast assisting military members transitioning between deployments. He was a very proud military veteran. Survivors include (in his words) his beautiful bride/pretty wife, Elizabeth Volz Helms; Favoritist Oldest Daughter Paula Helms; Favoritist young Daughter, Laura Helms Hunter; son, Martin Volz; Grandsons Dustin Ray Hunter Jr, Trystin Scott Hunter, Nova Wayne Volz. Sisters Linda Walden, Brenda Helms Turner (Johnny). Nephew Shane Gann and Niece Whitney Toth. As well as many other loved family members. Family was very important to him. He was so very proud of his wife, daughters and Grandsons and enjoyed any time that he could spend with them. Ron enjoyed traveling and working around his home with his Wife. He was also very proud of his woodworking skills having made several pieces for family members. He also had a love for old cars. The funeral service honoring the life Ron lived is Friday, January 12, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. at Georgia National Cemetery In Canton GA with Chaplain Donald Bridges officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson Street, in Newnan.
