Sue Helms Morris

Jack Edward Morris (July 26, 1936 - October 22, 2022) and Sue Helms Morris (October 27, 1937 - March 3, 2026) shared a life full of hard work, family and love for nearly sixty years. They were married on June 26, 1968, and from that day on, they rarely went anywhere without the other. If you saw one of them, you could be sure the other wasn't far behind. Jack was a man made of grit, determination, and a stubborn streak that those who loved him knew well. He helped build a life with his own two hands. In the late 1960's, he & his brother Robert opened Tri-City Foreign Cars, and before long, Jack struck out on his own to start Morris Fine Grading. He believed in hard work and doing things the right way, and he carried that attitude with him through every part of his life. Jack had several hobbies, but it was family tradition that sparked his love for racing. Dirt track racing ran deep in his blood. After years of watching his big brother Robert race, he finally built his first race car. He competed in the Hobby and Sportsman classes over the years, usually with M-1 emblazoned on the side of his car. And something many don't know about Jack is that he helped build the grandstands that still stand today at Senoia Raceway - grandstands that have held generations of fans, but even more so, a lifetime of memories that will never fade. Later in life, Jack learned to play the guitar after his son began teaching him. He practiced quietly, learning songs so he could play them for Sue. Eventually, he passed that guitar down to his great-grandson to have for whenever he would be ready to play. Sue was Jack's perfect counterpart. Where Jack was stubborn & determined, Sue was warmth & kindness (and had a bit of her own stubborn streak). She made friends everywhere she went and had a way of making people feel at home. Sue was the kind of person who made friends wherever she went. She began working in banking during her senior year of high school, and with her natural gift for numbers, she soon found her way into accounting. Over the years, she worked for companies such as General Motors, Lorraine Telephone Electronics, and later Globe Ticket & Label, where she would eventually retire. But titles and careers never defined her - her true gift was caring for the people around her, always the protector, always the one making sure everyone else was alright. Sue loved hummingbirds, and she always made her own special recipe that seemed to bring them flocking to the yard. She loved reading, and she had a quirky little hobby that not many people knew about - she loved washing & detailing cars. Sue even joined in Jack's love of racing herself, running a couple of races in the Powder Puff Class at Senoia Raceway. And in her final lucid moments, her heart and mind had taken her back to the place she loved so much - watching Jack race while she suited up for her final race. One of Sue's greatest joys was taking care of Jack. She loved cooking supper for him. When supper was ready, Sue would call the shop to let him know, and if he didn't answer the phone at the shop, she had her own way of calling him home - she'd simply ring the dinner bell. Together, Jack and Sue built a life centered around family and simple joys. They loved traveling with their grandchildren and making their way around the Southeast on little adventures, creating memories that their family still cherishes today. Saturday nights were for racing, and family gatherings meant ballgames, birthday parties, and time spent with the people they loved most. They built a life full of movement, adventure, and family. There were always dogs in their lives while their grandchildren were growing up. After their grandchildren were grown, they spent the next years buying, fixing up, and selling homes - always on the move, always working on the next project. Some of these projects would show Jack's stubborn streak... involving one lake that he eventually turned into two lakes. Even in retirement, they never slowed down. Jack was always fixing, building, or working, and Sue was always right there keeping things in order. Together, they seemed to run circles around the rest of us. And they treasured every chance to watch their grandchildren & great-grandchildren grow. Now, after years apart, Sue has found her way back to Jack. Somewhere beyond the finish line, the engines are roaring, the dirt is flying, and Jack & Sue are together again - hand in hand, watching over the family they loved so much. And for those they leave behind, the sound of a race engine on a Saturday night, the sight of hummingbirds in the yard, or the ringing of a dinner bell will always bring them back to the love and life Jack & Sue built together. Their story doesn't end here - it lives on in every lap turned by their grandsons, every memory shared, every song played on a guitar, and every generation that carries their name and their spirit forward. Sue and Jack are survived by their children, Wendell Morris and his girlfriend Anne; Wanda and Tommy Pope; and Kerry Morris. They also leave behind their grandchildren: Robert and Danielle Caldwell, Kenny and Lori Caldwell, Randall and Kristin Morris, and Tiffany and Chad Smith. Their legacy continues through their great-grandchildren: Tyler and fiancée Bre Caldwell, Jackson Caldwell, Gordon Caldwell, Chloee Caldwell, Cohen Morris, Kymber Morris, Brayden Smith, Micaiah Smith, and Lincoln Smith, as well as their great-great-granddaughter, Elowyn Garcia-Smith. Their story lives on through every one of them. A memorial service honoring both Jack and Sue will be held on April 12, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Westminster Memorial Gardens, where their ashes will be laid to rest together. Casual dress is encouraged.
