Velma Jean Webb

Mrs. Velma Jean Hughes Webb, 93 years old, of Newnan, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at home. Jean was born on April 11, 1933, in Blount County, Tennessee, to the late Thomas Hughes and Georgia Baldwin Hughes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters Mary Ruth Hughes Martindale and Patsy Hughes Spence. Jean Hughes grew up in Maryville, Tennessee, and was a graduate of Maryville High School, class of 1951. After high school, she worked as a salesclerk in a jewelry store until she met her future husband, Thomas Webb, and married on June 22, 1956. In February 1957, they welcomed their daughter, and shortly thereafter, the family moved to Marietta, Georgia, for her husband's apprenticeship at Lockheed. In 1960, Thomas was hired by Eastern Airlines, and they moved to Miami, Florida. During the 1960s and early 70s she helped her husband manage a trailer park and apartment complex while he worked his shifts at Eastern. They moved to Hialeah, Florida, in 1975 and opened an avionics business at Opa Locka Airport, where she worked as the office manager. In 1993, after selling the business and retiring, they moved to Newnan, Georgia, to be closer to their grandchildren. Over the years, Jean had many hobbies that she loved; her favorite was trout fishing. They would vacation at their A-frame in the Cherokee National Forest, fishing the Tellico River, and eventually she mastered the art of fly fishing. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, pro football, and spoiling her grandchildren. She was also a wonderful cook. Jean is survived by her husband of 69 years, Thomas Syvlan Webb of Etowah, Tennessee, and her daughter, Rebecca Jean Webb Gerard of Peachtree City, Georgia. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Danielle Marie Gerard Goldberger, Marc Michel Gerard, and Madeleine Rebecca Gerard Dawson, as well as her great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Jean and Genevieve Marie Goldberger, and Luke Alexander Dawson, and her brother, Ronald Hughes of Knoxville, Tennessee.
